The academic experience is designed to foster meaningful intersections between disciplines, allowing students to explore complex ideas from multiple perspectives and sharpen their critical thinking skills. Most courses at I.M. Terrell are offered at the Honors, OnRamps, or Advanced Placement (AP) level, ensuring that students are consistently challenged and prepared for college-level expectations.
College-Preparatory Humanities
The Humanities program at I.M. Terrell Academy is designed to cultivate thoughtful, articulate, and globally aware students who are prepared to lead and engage in a complex world. Rooted in a college-preparatory framework, the curriculum challenges students to explore the human experience through literature, history, philosophy, and the social sciences. Most humanities courses are offered at the Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or OnRamps level, ensuring that students are consistently engaged in high-level reading, writing, and critical analysis.
In English Language Arts, students delve into classic and contemporary texts that reflect diverse voices and perspectives. They learn to analyze literature through multiple lenses, craft persuasive and analytical essays, and engage in Socratic discussions that sharpen their reasoning and communication skills. Courses such as Honors English I–IV, AP English Language and Composition, and AP English Literature and Composition prepare students for the rigors of college writing and discourse.
The social studies curriculum is equally robust, guiding students through the study of history, government, economics, and culture. From World Geography and Honors World History to AP U.S. History, AP Government, and Macroeconomics, students gain a deep understanding of the forces that shape societies and the responsibilities of citizenship. These courses emphasize research, debate, and the ability to synthesize complex information—skills that are essential for success in any field.
What sets the humanities at I.M. Terrell apart is the way they are integrated with the school’s broader mission of innovation and expression. Students often connect their learning in English and social studies to their work in STEM and VPA, creating interdisciplinary projects that explore themes like identity, justice, sustainability, and leadership. Whether writing a historical screenplay, analyzing the rhetoric of a scientific movement, or curating a multimedia exhibit, students are encouraged to think deeply and express themselves with clarity and purpose.
The Humanities program not only prepares students for college—it prepares them to be informed, empathetic, and engaged citizens of the world.
