The College Application Process
Applying to college can feel overwhelming—but you don’t have to do it alone. This section is your go-to guide for navigating each step of the college application journey. From building your college list and writing your personal statement to requesting transcripts and submitting applications, we’ve got you covered.
Build Your College List

Include a mix of reach, match, and safety schools.

Consider factors like location, size, majors, cost, and campus culture.

Use tools like BigFuture or ApplyTexas for Texas schools.
Know Your Deadlines
- Early Action/Early Decision: Usually November 1st or November 15th
- Regular Decision: Typically around January/February
- FAFSA/TASFA: Opens October 1 (submit ASAP!)
- Scholarships: Deadlines vary — some are due as early as October
Complete Your Applications

Double-check requirements: essays, test scores, transcripts, etc.
Write Your Personal Statement
- Tell your story—what makes you you?
- Be authentic, reflective, and specific.
- Ask a teacher, counselor, or mentor to review it.
Request Letters of Recommendation
- Ask early (at least 3–4 weeks before the deadline).
- Provide a brag sheet or resume to help your recommender.

Send Your Transcripts & Test Scores
- Request transcripts through SchooLinks
- Send SAT/ACT scores directly from the testing agency (if required).
- I.M. Terrell Academy cannot send SAT/ACT/TSIA2 scores. Students must send them.
Apply for Financial Aid
- Complete the FAFSA or TASFA (depending on eligibility).
- Research and apply for scholarships—local, institutional, and national.
Track Your Applications
- Keep a spreadsheet or checklist of:
- Deadlines
- Submitted materials
- Login info for each college portal
Check Your Email & Portals
- Colleges will communicate important updates through email and their application portals—check regularly!
