Honors Art 1 (1051AB)

Honors Art 1 develops and expands visual literacy skills in apprentices using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning about, understanding, and applying the elements of art, principles of design, and expressive qualities. It offers the opportunity to communicate thoughts, feelings, ideas, or principles of design, and expressive qualities. It offers the opportunity to communicate thoughts, feelings, ideas, or impressions though original artwork using art media and tools in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, design, and digital art and media. Apprentices create a portfolio with rigorous assignments. Apprentices develop an understanding of art history and culture by analyzing artistic styles, historical periods, and a variety of cultures, as well as the ability to respond to and analyze the artworks of self and others. Honors level apprentices will expand their art ability and understanding to a higher degree with a final project related to the exploration of visual arts.

Honors Art 2 Sculpture (1069AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art 1
Honors Art 2 Sculpture develops and expands visual literacy skills in apprentices by using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning about, understanding, and applying the elements of art, principles of design, and expressive qualities. Honors Art 2 Sculpture apprentices will demonstrate their proficiency in the fundamentals of form, including its relationship to scale and environment. Apprentices will demonstrate proficiency in the communication of one's ideas in three dimensional form using different materials, and the ability to evaluate the artwork measured against form versus function. Apprentices will demonstrate proficiency in basic hand skills, modeling, and construction through additive and subtractive techniques. Honors apprentices must compete in all visual arts competitions.
 

Honors Art 2 Ceramics (1081AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art 1
Honors Art 2 Ceramics develops and expands visual literacy skills in apprentices by using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning about, understanding, and applying the elements of art, principles of design, and expressive qualities. Honors Art 2 Ceramics apprentices will demonstrate their proficiency in various forming methods including pinch, coil, slab, wheeling throwing, and sculpture techniques. Ceramics apprentices will demonstrate proficiency in a variety of surface techniques such as glazing, sgraffito, stamping, painting, and other surface decorative methods. Apprentices will demonstrate proficiency in the communication of one's ideas in three dimensional form using different materials, and the ability to evaluate the artwork measured against form versus function. Apprentices will demonstrate proficiency in basic hand skills, modeling, and construction through additive and subtractive techniques. Honors apprentices must compete in all visual arts competitions.
 

Honors Art 3 (1035AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art, level 2
Honors Art 3 develops and expands visual literacy skills in apprentices by using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning about, understanding, and applying the elements of art, principles of design, and expressive qualities. It offers an advanced level opportunity to communicate thoughts, feelings, ideas, or impressions through original artwork. It emphasizes the process and techniques in using art media and tools in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, jewelry, mixed media, photography, and digital art and media. Apprentices create a portfolio with rigorous assignments. Apprentices develop an understanding of art history and culture by analyzing artistic styles, historical periods, and a variety of cultures, as well as the ability to respond to and analyze the artworks of self and others.
 

Honors Art 3 Painting (1059AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art 1 
Honors Art 3 Painting develops and expands visual literacy skills in apprentices by using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning about, understanding, and applying the elements of art, principles of design, and expressive qualities. In Honors Art 3 Painting, students must demonstrate proficiency in controlled mark-making with an artwork by using wet mediums such as gouache, acrylic, oil, watercolor, tempera, encaustic, and mixed media. Honors Art 3 Painting apprentices will develop proficiency in methods of paint application to achieve blending, value techniques and mark-making techniques, compositional layout and medium control. Apprentices must demonstrate proficiency in compositional design through both direct observation and rendering and student-created original compositions. Apprentices are required to develop a portfolio that demonstrates both realism and abstraction in painting methods. Honors apprentices must compete in all visual arts competitions.
 

Honors Art 3 Sculpture (1071AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art 2 Sculpture 
Honors Art 3 Sculpture develops and expands visual literacy skills in apprentices by using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning about, understanding, and applying the elements of art, principles of design, and expressive qualities. AP Studio Art: Two-Dimensional Design Portfolio (1043AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art 1; Any specialized area of Art 2
AP 2-D Art and Design is an introductory college-level two-dimensional design course. Apprentices refine and apply 2-D skills to ideas they develop throughout the course. The AP Art and Design framework is composed of course skills, big ideas, essential questions and enduring understanding, learning objectives, and essential knowledge. AP Art and Design skill categories delineate overarching understandings central to the study and practice of art and design. Each of the three skill categories consists of skills that encompass foundational to advanced learning over the span of the course. Apprentices need to develop, practice, and apply these skills in a variety of contexts. The AP 2-D Art and Design course framework is made up of three big ideas: investigate materials, process, and ideas, make art and design, and present art and design. Apprentices should practice the skills that will help them learn to think and act like artists. Apprentices will develop a portfolio that will be submitted for critical analysis in 2D for the Advanced Placement (AP) exam in Studio Art.
 

AP Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio (1041AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art 1; Any specialized area of Art 2

AP Drawing is an introductory college-level two-dimensional design course. Students refine and apply drawing skills to ideas they develop throughout the course. The AP Art and Design course framework is composed of course skills, big ideas, essential questions and enduring understandings, learning objectives, and essential knowledge. AP Art and Design skill categories delineate overarching understandings central to the study and practice of art and design. Each of the three skill categories consists of skills that encompass foundational to advanced learning over the span of the course. Students need to develop, practice, and apply these skills in a variety of contexts. The AP Drawing Art and Design course framework is made up of three big ideas: investigate materials, processes, and ideas; make art and design; and present art and design. Students should practice the skills that will help them learn to think and act like artists. Students will develop a portfolio that will be submitted for critical analysis in Drawing for the Advanced Placement Exam in Studio Art.

AP Studio Art: Three-Dimensional Design Portfolio (1020AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art 1; Any specialized area of Art 2

Honors Art 4 - Capstone (1020AB)

Prerequisite: Honors Art 3

Honors Art IV further expands visual literacy skills using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning about, understanding, and applying the elements of art, principles of design, and expressive qualities. It offers an advanced-level opportunity to communicate thoughts, feelings, ideas, or impressions through original artwork. The course emphasizes advanced processes and techniques in using art media and tools in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, jewelry, mixed media, photography, and digital art and media. Students create a portfolio with rigorous assignments and demonstrate growth in skill level. Students develop an understanding of art history and culture by analyzing artistic styles, historical periods, and a variety of cultures, as well as the ability to respond to and analyze the artworks of self and others. Honors Art IV is a two-semester sequence course, with the first semester being a prerequisite to the second semester.
